The Philippine Merchant Marine Academy (PMMA) is the only premier state maritime institution in the Philippines. PMMA offers merchant marine related degree courses, as well as short term training and re-training of marine officers and ratings seamen.

 

PMMA midshipmen are government scholars, who are provided free tuition fee, board and lodging and have an assured shipboard training onboard international vessels during their third year with corresponding stipend. Upon graduation, PMMA midshipmen are assured of 100% employment rate and are the usual choice and preference of major global shipping and manning companies for assignment to International Ocean-going vessels as deck officers and engineers.

 

PMMA midshipmen are selected from all over the Philippines through a rigid selection process. Out of average examinees of 6,400 about 5% successfully pass the different stages of the screening process and subsequently take their oath as full-fledged PMMA midshipmen.

Courses/ Program Offered

 

The PMMA offers two (2) major programs, namely: Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation (BSMT) and Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering (BSMarE). These programs are four-year residency courses consisting of a three-year academic studies (1st, 2nd and 4th year) and one year shipboard training on the 3rd year on board commercial vessels plying the international routes as deck or engine cadets.

 

 

 

WHAT IS THE ADMISSION/APPLICATION PROCEDURE?

 

  • Interested applicant who wishes to take the Entrance Examination should apply in person or through mail to the Admissions Office, PMMA Complex, San Narciso, Zambales. Applicants by mail must fill-up the Application Form (requires Acrobat Reader) and mail it to:

  • Only true and correct entries are accepted; any false information will be aground for disqualification.

  • FILING OF APPLICATION. Applicants have two (2) options to file their application:
    • Personal – right after the last entrance examination up to September (the following year) at PMMA Zambales only
    • Mail – right after the last entrance examination up to August 31 only (the following year)
  • FILING REQUIREMENTS:
    • Three (3) copies of recent 2×2 colored pictures with name tag, front view; white background;
    • 2 self-addressed long white mailing envelopes with P40.00 worth of mailing stamp per envelope for mailing of Test Permit and Examination Result.
    • Certification from School Principal that applicant is currently enrolled as Grade 12, Photocopy of Senior High School Diploma or Form 138/Photocopy of Diploma for College graduate, Photocopy of Registration form, if College level.
    • Photocopy of PSA Birth Certificate. (Baptismal and Hospital Birth Certificate not honored)

    • Certificate of No Marriage (CENOMAR) to be submitted upon enrollment as probationary midshipmen-women)

Note:

  • Incomplete filing requirements will not be processed.
  • Application forms are available at all testing centers nationwide or can be downloaded from our website.

 

PMMA Entrance Examination

 

          To be admitted in the Academy you need to pass their entrance examination. Like PMA, PNP examination, the PMMA entrance examination is also objective type and cover the core subjects of graduating high school students namely:

 

  • English (Vocabulary, Grammar, Analogy, Reading Comprehension)
  • Mathematics (Algebra, Geometry, Statistics and Trigonometry)
  • Science (General Science, Chemistry and Physics)
  • Abstract Reasoning

 

The Academy’s Entrance Examination is administered every last Saturday of September of each year at selected Testing Centers nationwide.

 

Each applicant whose qualifications have been approved shall be given a permit to take the test by the Admissions Office. For mailed applications, permit to take the test will be sent to the applicant through mail.

Applicants must take note of the following:

  • Examination is from 8:00 am – 12:00 nn
  • Arrive one (1) hour before the examination proper at the designated testing center
  • Bring the issued test permit (the applicant must show any valid I.D. in case he did not receive his test permit)
  • Bring any valid identification
  • Use only Mongol Pencil Number 2
  • Calculators are not allowed

Entrance Examination results will be published in the PMMA website (PMMA Entrance Examination) two (2) months after the day of the examination. Individual test results will be mailed to the examinees not later than the same month.

 

NEURO-PSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATION

 

          After you passed the academy’s entrance examination, the next step is the neuro-psychological evaluation. All candidates will be assessed for Psychological health including:

  • IQ: for intelligence
  • EQ: for emotional stability
  • Personality profiling

 

MEDICAL SCREENING

Successful examinees of the Neuro-Psychological Evaluation still have to undergo and pass the following to qualify for admission:

  • Pre-Medical
    • Height/ Weight Requirements
    • Color Perception Test ( ISHIHARA)
    • Snellen’s Eye Test
  • Dental Examination
  • Laboratory Examination
  • Physical Examination

One-Month Orientation Training

 

The Summer Orientation Training is a one-month indoctrination course where probationary midshipmen are quartered at the PMMA compound during the entire duration of the period. The “probies” are isolated from their families and friends and prohibited from entertaining visitors.

A hectic schedule consisting of military training, refresher course in Mathematics, English and introductory lectures in Navigation or Marine Engineering makes up the day of every “proby”.

Applicants who qualified for the One-month Orientation Training must report to the Philippine Merchant Marine Academy on the first day of July.

 

Appointment as Midshipman

 

An applicant after passing the rigid requirements of the Orientation and Indoctrination Period, and fully accomplished all necessary papers for registration, will be sworn in as a midshipman of the Philippine Merchant Marine Academy and subsequently issued a CERTIFICATE OF APPOINTMENT as midshipman by the PMMA Superintendent.
